Bartoccini's clay is extracted from the field beside the furnace, where it is refined with the use of fine sifters and then left to mature outdoors. Since Bartoccini's site is at 500 m above sea level, in winter the clay dries up and in the summer the blistering heat cracks the clay, forming the typical crackle texture of Bartoccini's handmade terracotta.

Polirone’s terracotta is made by hand tile by tile according to the unchanged rules of mixing, moulding and baking in a Hoffman oven. Passionate research and careful study allow Polirone to perform repairs and reconstructions of ancient and historical floorings. Their speciality are the famous veined (“Variegated”) Lombard, which was mostly produced as a rectangular tile. Many types of "grain" were used as an ingredient to produce the tile as several kilns scattered over the Avvelevano territory, which was rich in different kinds of soil and grain. Each kiln had developed their own treatment procedures and forming techniques; during the renovation of various buildings, various patterns, as well in size and colour tone as in texture, were found. It is worth mentioning that the various handmade tiles and compositions were produced during 1830 – 1850 by the "Furnace of Count Lana" in Borgonato. The veined Lombards produced by this kiln were mainly used for important buildings in different cities of Lombardy (Milan, Cremona, Bergamo, Mantova, Brescia). Because of its authentic colours and features, its unique variations and patterns and its rich appearance and aura, many architects and interior designers in Europe dropped their eye on the forgotten "Veined Variegated Lombard". The tile and its sides are grinded flat after baking which, when laid, creates a beautiful seamless and authentic looking floor.
